Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When she was young her carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to work as a cleaning girl and waitress to support her family. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. After only two school years she left for an acting profession. The route she took did not come without challenges. In New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. acting work she longed to do was abyssal. In New York, she worked in a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. There, she made enough money as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
